Stanley Park
This is the largest city park's 404 hectares (1,000 acres) in Canada. Described by one local writer as a
thousand-acre therapeutic couch, it began as a military reserve in the mid 1800?s to guard the entrance to
Vancouver harbour from aggressive Americans. The Vancouver Parks Board supervises it and just about
every resident in the city has an opinion if anybody has plans to make any changes other than cutting the grass.
On December 15, 2006 a major windstorm struck Stanley Park. The result was a level of forest damage
not seen since the Freida storm of 1962. As well as hundreds of trees blown over and scattered
throughout the park, eight areas totalling approximately 41 hectres were severely impacted. Damage of this scale is
deeply felt and the community led by businessman Jimmy Pattison started an outpouring of support and
advice. Pattison offered up to a million dollars to lead the recovery of the park, which was followed by other
concerned citizens, the city, and the province of B.C.
In all, close to ten million dollars was raised to clean
up, and create a restoration plan for Stanley Park.
